Wired has a great article and a look back at Wolfenstein’s history. This is the 19th anniversary of the game’s release.
Wolfenstein was the first big first-person shooter game, laying the groundwork for Doom, and then Heretic, and Rise of the Triad and…am I seriously going to just name all the big 1st person PC shooters? Nah. Except for Dark Forces and Duke Nukem. And then the jump to consoles for Goldeneye, and Turok (yes, I did go there) and Perfect Dark (awesome game that was) and then of course Halo, and Call of Duty.
It all started with the Nazi-Zombie shoot ’em up that was Wolfenstein. Ah, just thinking about it makes me remember typing in DOS prompts. C:\Respect.
